Financial Aid

Linguistics graduate students typically obtain substantial financial support through employment as teaching assistants (TAs) and graduate student researchers (GSRs), and additional sources also are available.

 

The Department of Linguistics takes advantage of every opportunity to secure equitable funding for all new and continuing Ph.D. students, provided that they are making satisfactory progress toward completion of their degree.

Linguistics fellowships, scholarships and awards are other means of support for our students. The UC Davis Office of Graduate Studies offers guidance about other funding sources available for domestic and international students.

  • GSR Assistantships
  • Individual faculty members award Graduate Student Research (GSR) assistantships from faculty research grant funding. Graduate students negotiate for GSR positions with their major professor during the admission process, or prior to the beginning of each quarter.
  • FAFSA
  • To be eligible for all funding opportunities, applicants must file a FAFSA (Free Application for Federal Student Aid) and a fellowship application available from the Graduate Studies website. All graduate applicants who are U.S. citizens, permanent residents or immigrants are required to file a FAFSA as early as possible, but no later than March 1 of the academic year of your application. This form, submitted directly to the Federal Student Aid Program Office, Iowa City, Iowa, is used to determine financial need only, a component of the eligibility criteria for many fellowships, and for all forms of financial aid. Consult the UC Davis Financial Aid and Scholarships Office for student financial support information. After filing for FAFSA, you will receive a Student Aid Report (SAR) from the federal processor. Students with a valid SAR should log in to MyAwards to view their UC Davis aid package and requirements. 
  • Fellowships

  • The UC Davis Office of Graduate Studies maintains a searchable fellowships and grants database accessible to continuing graduate students. Check those listings regularly for updates. The Office of Graduate Studies, in partnership with the UC Davis Internship and Career Center and Aggie Job Link (AJL) also posts on-campus opportunities for postdoctoral students who wish to work with UC Davis investigators.

    Fellowship applications are due January 15.

  • Loans
  • Students may receive as much as $20,500 through a Federal Direct Unsubsidized Loan. Students also may borrow up to the cost of attendance minus other estimated financial aid in Graduate PLUS Loan. During designated times of the year, Short-term loans are also among the types of financial aid offered. Loans are financial aid awards that require repayment with interest under varying terms and conditions.
